A little more than a year ago, my kids were home from school playing in my studio, looking for things to get into – as kids do. It began with a corset bone sword fight, which set the pirate theme for the day. The sword fight, as usual led to a disaster, and this time, it was a jar of antique charms I had used for a corset design long ago, that ended up on the floor. They now wanted to play with the small sparkles and charms, scattered about the floor – still in full pirate speak “Arr, give me yer treasure!”. Naturally, the oldest hoarded all of them, much to the youngers’ dismay. This was all quite a racket, so I asked them to please play with their treasure elsewhere.
A while later, I checked up on them, and Izzy had fastened these charms to the tops of the corset bones, and was attempting to teach Kaiden how to do so as well, but he was more interested in jamming them into his favourite Captain Underpants book.
This was not only a great way to keep them busy on a PA day, but they had created several beautiful items with these corset bones and charms. Thus, X Marks The Spot bookmarks was born.
They had sold a few here and there to family and even some customers who took notice. They agreed that profits from the sales would be donated to the Toronto Humane Society, which they love to visit.
Check back regularly, as they love to make new ones and have a keen eye for spotting new charms.
X Marks The Spot Bookmarks are available through the Starkers website here: X Marks The Spot
